About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1932. Near Fine condition in a Near Very Good dust jacket. Square, tight, unmarked copy. Sharp corners. Cloth spine is lightly faded. The spine of the Dust Jacket is sunned (paper browning but lettering still distinct) else Very Good. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. First book appearance of three stories [Neighbor Rosicky; Old Mrs. Harris; & Two Friends] previously published in magazines. Original green cloth. Mounted on the spine and front cover are the original pale blue paper labels, printed in orange and black. This copy's Dust Jacket agrees with that described first in Joan Crane's Willa Cather, A Bibliography, i.e. gray-pink wove paper printed in red and blue. [Crane also describes an alternate jacket (no priority), printed in green and dark red on bright yellow paper]. Crane notes that "on all copies of both jackets, a corner is cut away from the front inner flap where the price was printed." Crane explains that the publisher had a large number of jackets imprinted with a $2.50 flap price, but clipped the price before publication, having decided to offer the book for $2.00. [Watch out for an unclipped Dust Jacket with $2.00 printed price on a first edition book -- that jacket has been switched from a much later copy. First printing, price-clipped jackets were used on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th printings, and were not used up until midway through the 5th printing]. Crane A19.a.i. Bruccoli, First Printings of American Authors, IV: p. 73.. First Printing of First Trade Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/Near Very Good dust jacket. 8vo. 230pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
