From the publisher

A man dressed in rags is found lying on the railroad tracks, crushed by a freight train. A police canvass soon reveals that three men had carefully deposited the body there earlier in the evening. A few days later, an abandoned truck is found with traces of an illegal toxic waste in its bed. And later still, a woman is found dead in her home, the victim of a savage knife attack. As Lt. Joe Gunther and his team reconstruct the three random cases, a connection slowly materializes from an explosive political contest between an ambitious state senator and his rival, the Speaker of the House. Suddenly, the murder of a trucker, the death of a blackmailing hooker, and the threat of deadly toxins seem perfectly connected in this new and bizarre case.
