About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz, 1963-1966. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 8" by 5". None. Two first edition novels by South African writer Nadine Gordimer, comprised of Occasion for Loving and The Late Bourgeois World. These works are both first editions in publisher's original red cloth binding with original dust wrappers. The Late Bourgeois World has a clipped dust wrapper, while Occasion for Loving is unclipped. Nadine Gordimer was a South African writer and political activist who received the Nobel Prize in LIterature in 1991 to recognise the benefit her work has been to humanity. Gordimer's work dealt with many racial and moral issues, notably the apartheid in South Africa, as she saw first-hand the damage it caused. She was active in the African National Congress and often advised Nelson Mandela. Occasion for Loving is one of Gordimer's works which deals with the issue of apartheid. The work follows the story of a married white woman, Ann Davis, who falls in love with Gideon Shibalo, who is black and therefore their relationship is against the law. The Late Bourgeois World had similar subject matter, following the life of a white South African woman as she experiences a failing marriage. This novel was Gordimer's first experience with censorship, as it was banned for a decade in 1976 by the South African government. In original publisher's red cloth binding, with an unclipped dust wrapper on Occasion for Loving, and a clipped dust wrapper on The Late Bourgeois World. Externally, excellent with minor shelf wear only. Light offsetting to the endpapers of Occasion for Loving. Dust wrapper for The Late Bourgeois World in excellent condition, with minor edgewear and the odd handling mark. Dust wrapper for Occasion for Loving in very good condition, with light edgewear and the occasional mark. Occasion for Loving wrap has tide mark to the lower half of the board with tape to the reverse of the wrap and age toning to paper. Internally firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Very Good Indeed
