About This Item

Archive of Nine issues of The Crisis magazine, the official organ of the NAACP, 1970-1972. The Crisis was founded by W. E. B. Du Bois, who edited the early volumes. Measuring 7.75" x 11". Issues included: January 1970 (Vol. 77, No. 1), April 1970 (Vol. 77, No. 4), May 1970 (Vol. 77, No. 5), June-July 1970 (Vol. 77, No. 6), August-September 1970 (Vol. 77, No. 7), December 1970 (Vol. 77, No. 10), January-February 1971 (Vol. 78, No.1), November 1971 (Vol. 78, No. 9), December 1972 (Vol. 79, No. 10). The Crisis is the official magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It was founded by W. E. B. Du Bois (editor) the magazine set itself up as arguably the most widely read and influential periodical about race and social injustice in U.S. history. As a platform for the NAACP's views, the magazine acted as a corrective force in the publishing field when it came to African American representation in the media. Therefore, much of the published content depicts both uplifting accounts of achievements by African Americans and uncensored reports of racial discrimination and violence. The January 1970 issue discusses police violence against Black Panther members and a several page spread on the Memphis education crisis, showcasing multiple photographs of peaceful Black protesters with signs demanding better education and more jobs for the African American community. Another harrowing article in the May 1970 issue talks about the desegregation of public schools and Black children's testimonials of experiencing violence from their white peers and their parents with many white adults violently attacking buses to prevent them from entering their schools. A thought provoking article from the June-July 1970 issue titled "On Misunderstanding Black Militancy," the writer responds to a Jewish reporter's question regarding the peaceful demonstrations of King Jr.'s era versus the more aggressive manner of Black advocacy in the current age. The writer goes on to explain that the peaceful demonstrations such as the March on Washington were met with "white violence and frequent bombings of black property, including a church where four little girls were killed...so much happened so fast that many were trying to forget how many lynchings, how many gunshots, how many bombings, how much discrimination make people stop being 'peaceful'?" This Black Panther era archive features articles on developments in civil rights legislation, desegregation of schools, cross-racial coalitions forming against bigotry, Black college achievement, Black Pulitzer Prize Awards, and updates on the actions undertaken by NAACP president Roy Wilkins as well as those of individual branches across the country. All nine issues in good to very good condition overall.
