(Port Elizabeth: Port Elizabeth Automobile Club, 1919). 8vo; coarse khaki cloth, lettered in black to upper board; pp. 100; includes a key map and a further 37 route maps (these are printed rectos, blank on the verso); adverts. Boards bumped; cloth tape reinforcing to hinges; binding slack; earlier owner's hand-stamp or ownership label in a few places; some contemporary pencilled annotations to route maps and loosely inserted page with earlier owner's handwritten notes on distances. Good condition. Exceptionally uncommon and very early motoring handbook. OCLC notes just the National Library of South Africa copy. Quoted in RH Johnston's ''Early Motoring in South Africa", page 154: "Starting for a Tour - Don't Forget! Distilled Water; Greasecups, etc, full; Tin of Oil; Jack and Tools; Spring Repair Clamp; Reims, Rope, Chains; Petrol Tank Full; Oil Reservoir Full; Tin of Water for Radiator; Pump, Spare Tube and Repair Outfit; Pennies for Gates; A Vacuum Flask and Biscuits." .
