Prolific author Lady Jackson was the daughter of Thomas Wakefield, specialised in the area of European history and of the court of France in the sixteenth century. The present volumes, a set complete in two, explore the history of old Paris, its courts and its literary salons, the centre of European literary society, which contributed in building the city's monumental reputation across the world. From the Coronation of of Marie de Medicis in 1610, to the reign of Louis XIV, Jackson provides a comprehensive overview of the early history of Paris. This work originally appeared in London in 1878, and in the US in 1880. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven full page plates to each volume. Collated, complete. In the unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's full cloth binding, with gilt tooling to the spine and front board. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear and a minor fading to the spine, the head and tail of the spine slightly bumped. The dust wrapper is unclipped and excellent, with minor shelf wear only; professionally reinforced internally. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean throughout with a light foxing to the occasional leaf only. Most leaves are unopened. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven full page plates to each volume.
