About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1958. Hardcover. 8vo. Half black cloth with gilt spine lettering and cream paper over boards. 310pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Binding mildly worn; endpapers a bit age toned. Tight and nice first edition of this biography of the 15th century Swiss theologian well known for his travelogue of his journey to Palestine. Interestingly, this copy hails from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1970-81) and before him his father, Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) -- who apparently used as a page marker (ee newsprint ghost on pp. 30-31) an undated 1957 crumpled newspaper clipping noting that 27-year-old"Adlai E. Stevenson Jr. of Chicago, son of Democratic Party leader Adlai E. Stevenson" was among 52 people ticketed on Labor Day weekend for speeding; his forfeited bond cost $14. Made the old man proud enough he apparently used it for a bookmark!
