About This Item
London: John Murray, 1921. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 9" by 6". None. A scarce, signed, first edition copy of this early account of Modern Singapore. Inscription from the author to R W Makepeace to the front pastedown of both volumes. Walter Makepeace was an editor of 'The Singapore Free Press'. He is best known for co-editing this work, which is regarded as the colony's official history. Walter Makepeace was asked, alongside Gilbert Brooke and Roland Braddell to edit this work. Brooke was a port health officer in Singapore and Roland Braddell was a former attorney-general of the Straits Settlements. This work looks at the history of Modern Singapore since its founding by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 as a trading post of the British Empire. There are personal reminiscences of prominent officials and citizens as well as accounts of Singapore's schools, churches, trade, amusements and institutions. The book relies heavily on newspaper sources. Rebound, in a full cloth binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Author's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good Indeed
