Langendijk, Dirk (Rotterdam 1748-1805). Original drawing - Battle scene of cavalry and infantry, a church in the background. Oblong 8vo. ca. 19 x 15 cm. Very fine, original pen and wash drawing, in greys with some use of colour, signed and dated 1802.

Lively battle scene, the cavalry heavily attacking, one cavalrist blowing a trumpet, and another carrying the flag, with broken canon wheels and dead soldiers, a horse lying in the foreground, and in the middle, lighted by the fire of the infantry, cavalry and other troops attacking from all sides, amidst large clouds and a church seen far away in the background. Dirk Langendijk (1748-1805), was born in Rotterdam and is especially known for his fine drawings of battle scenes. He and his equally famous artist son Jan Anthonie Langendijk (1780-1818), often drew from nature. Both are regarded as the most important Dutch painters of military scenes documenting the French revolutionary and the Napoleonic wars in the Low Countries. His drawings were already collected during his life-time.

Upper right corner with very small damage, however - A good copy. - Cf. Atlas van Stolk 3857-3858 (drawings of similar battle scenes); Hans van Leeuwen Coll. II, 355 (drawing of a similar battle scene); see also: Dirk Langendijk (1748-1805), tekenaar tussen kruitdamp en vaderlands gevoel, Rotterdam, 1982.

1889. WALTON, William. THE ARMY AND NAVY OF THE UNITED STATES, 1776-1891. Philadelphia: George Barrie, 1889-1895. Edition de luxe, number 164. Two folio volumes in 12 parts: Army; Navy, and a register of the Army and Navy from 1775-1865. [2], 128; 38, 171 pp. Housed in publisher's cloth portfolios, while the 12 parts are present, one of the portfolio folders is missing. Illustrated with 44 hand-colored plates and with numerous black & white illustrations tipped-in to text leaves. Plates and text are printed on paper watermarked with the title. The plates are beautfully colored and fresh. The text leaves and plates were originally glued into paper wrappers, which were then glued into the portfolios; the glue has disintegrated and the sheets are now loose in the portfolios. The title-page is lacking. There is marginal dampstaing to many text leaves, with some dust-soiling at edges, and the portfolios are soiled. This is truly a de luxe edition, with printing and paper of the best quality, but the… Read More

1681 English Civil WAR 1ed Dugdale Troubles in England French Wars of Religion

William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, 'Troubles in England'
is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars – English Civil War, Barons' War, and the French Wars of Religion – and how they related to each other. Interestingly, the DNB notes that this work was "written throughout in a strain of animosity to all who took the anti-royalist side." However, this work isnotable for its accuracy.

1837 Naval History Britain War of 1812 British NAVY Ships WARS 6v HMS Spartan

William James was a 19th-century British naval historian who wrote numerous military history texts. One of his best works was 'The Naval History of Great Britain' which was written in response to many of the perspectives on the War of 1812. James was highly critical of British Captain Edward Brenton, who wrote a history of British naval warfare that seemed to be both unreliable and heavily biased.
This impressive, six-volume set includes numerous diagrams of the formations of British naval fleets.

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
