An ORIGINAL c. 1900 late Victorian/Early Edwardian Full Colour loose leaf Advertisement for LUX - formerly tipped into an old book - measuring 6.5" high x 4" wide. The illustration by 'Hassall' (John Hassell) is highly politically incorrect nowadays (! ) consisting of a full colour illustration of big black 'Mama' washing the hair of a small black 'Picaninny' boy in a small tub on a wooden 'Lux' crate, having his hair washed in Lux Shampoo, with the caption - "LUX Wont Shrink Wool". On the Reverse is Text Advertising Lux = " LUX. Specially prepared to prevent the shrinkage of woollens, Flannels and Dainty Fabrics. For All Toilet and Household Uses. A Splendid Shampoo..." . , etc, etc. Lever, and many other firms, commissioned many now important artists to Advertise their wares for them in this way - and, as nowadays, these adverts were inserted into reading materials to reach the masses. The few that have survived tend to be in VG condition as they were kept enclosed in the books/magazines. This copy has a couple of old stains in the right hand blank margin where it was affected by 2 rusty staples but the rest of the ad is almost As New. Clean and VERY Bright. An Absolutely Delightful Period piece of its time! - but .... There would undoubtedly be a backlash if published today! . All these ads look great framed.
