About This Item

London: W. Corbett, 1817. First edition. Brochure/Pamphlet. Good. 8" by 5". None. The first seven letters from William Corbett's early nineteenth century pamphlet warning against the dangers of paper money. An unbound pamphlet from William Cobbet's Paper Against Gold. Originally comprised of 32 letters written by Cobbett between 1810 and 1815, the present copy contains letters I to VII. Cobbett was a farmer, pamphleteer, journalist, and politician who's polemics ranged from political to religious reform. After publicly objecting to the flogging of local militiamen by Hanoverians at Ely, Cambridgeshire in the The Register, Corbett was found guilty of treasonous libel in 1810, and wrote the present pamphlet during his two-year incarceration in Newgate Prison. Through his inquiry into the origin of money, its influence on the effects of men, and how prices depend upon its quantity, the pamphlet warns against the dangers of paper money. Printed in two columns per page so that each column counts as a page. An unbound pamphlet from Cobbett's Paper Against Gold. Externally, a little grubby, with some light wear toward the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Good
