Printed for J. And R. Tonson and S. Draper,, 1749.. 1749 Two volumes. 4to. 28 cm. Engraved portrait by Vertue in each volume and twelve engraved plates by Hayman. List of Subscribers. First Newton edition. Contemporary mottled calf, worn. Both volumes rebacked at some time, joints now cracking. Replacement endpapers. Some offset from portrait and light toning of the paper in the text block area in Vol. I. Volume I contains Newton's Dedication of his edition to William Pulteney, Earl of Bath, Preface, Life of Milton, gratulatory verses by Barrow and Marvell, Addison's Critique and the Subscriber List. Newton attempted to to re-establish Milton's text free from accumulated errors and his remained the standard edition for the next 150 years.
