Beautifully bound in contemporaneous full red calf with elaborate gilt tooling to boards and spine. Five bands and calf tile (from which the gilt lettering has rubbed away) to spine. Gilt outer and inner dentelles. Calf to joints is cracked but bands hold boards very steady. Covers a little edge-worn and lightly abraded and marked here and there. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of 'John Hunter of The Hermitage' to front pastedown. A touch of foxing to outermost leaves. Front fly-leaf (blank) excised. Name and date penned to frontispiece verso. Small nick to bottom/inner corner of title page, as pictured. All edges gilt. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece. Unpaginated prelims, viii and 127pp. 4to. 11 1/8". Provenance: From the deceased estate of The Hermitage, Hexham, Northumberland. The Hermitage is a stately home which was occupied by the same family for more than 200 years, during which time the family amassed a wealth of choice antiquities.
