About This Item

London, England: Granta Press, 2021. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. London, England: Granta Press, 2021. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 295 pages. The author's second novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a bookplate. Published in a small and limited first print run in the United Kingdom by Granta Press as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Anuk Arudpragasam's "A Passage North". An ambitious and innovative twist on the soi-disant "war novel". The Sri Lankan Civil War is evoked and remembered from an anguished distance by Krishnan, the protagonist, who did not take part in it and harbors survivor's guilt about it. As such, its themes and concerns are similar to yet depart considerably from his (astonishingly beautiful) debut, "The Story of A Brief Marriage" (2016), the latter about a union that begins and ends in "real time" during the same Sri Lankan Civil War. Therefore still an evocation and remembrance of the past, as all novels are. Both are postmodernist, post-realist novels, and somewhat frustratingly for some critics and readers, have no actual, direct dialogue (plus pages-long paragraphs a la Saramago and Sebald), which Arudpragasam rejects as "literary ventriloquism" for a novel written in English because his characters did not speak in English. "A revelatory exploration of the aftermath of war. Extraordinary and often illuminating" (Financial Times). An absolute "must-have" title for Anuk Arudpragasam collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Anuk Arudpragasam. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or the bookplate the publisher issued to satisfy consumer demand. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such title-page signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in subsequent printing. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Finalist for the Booker Prize in 2021 for "A Passage North". One of the most brilliant new voices in contemporary literature. A fine copy. . ISBN 1783786949.
