Both are postmodernist, post-realist novels, and somewhat frustratingly for some critics and readers, have no actual, direct dialogue (plus pages-long paragraphs a la Saramago and Sebald), which Arudpragasam rejects as "literary ventriloquism" for a novel written in English because his characters did not speak in English.
