The Countess of Longford is a leading historian who only began her writing career in her fifties. Before that she had combined her roles as wife of Frank Pakenham, the Labour Cabinet Minister and future Earl of Longford, as mother and as prospective Labour candidate. She was the eldest daughter of a distinguished Harley Street doctor, niece of Joseph Chamberlain, and first cousin to Neville Chamberlain.
