London: Willoughby & Co, 1851. Hardcover. Very Good. [2], 363, [1], 52 p., engraved title page and 24 leaves of plates; 26 cm. Contemporary half calf with five spine compartments between double gilt rules; gilt-tooled title in second compartment. Paper label with handwritten number in first compartment. Marbled paper over boards. Caption title p. 1: The People's Journal; with which is incorporated Howitt's Journal. Final 52 pages are headed Appendix. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that this was acquired by the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1864. No date of publication or volume number. From 1849 to 1851 the magazine was published by Willoughby & Co. The Appendix on p. 48 references a work published in 1851. Contents include fiction by George Sand, Georgina C. Munro, Elizabeth O'Hara, Paul Creyton [John Townsend Trowbridge], and others; poetry by Charles Mackay, Henry Frank Lott, and others; Indian legends by Kah-Ge-Ga-Gah-Bouh [George Copway]; a description of the establishment of John and Richard Morley "Warehousemen, Hosiers, and Glovers" in London including the dormitories of their employees; The Balance of Employment: Its Political and Moral Necessity by Clara Walbey; The Adventures of Peter Viaud; and articles about "life assurance" (life insurance), the slave trade, and the life of a draper's assistant. Two leaves of portraits have been traced in pencil on the reverse side. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: cover is rubbed; title page and facing plate are lightly soiled; closed 2-cm. tear from fore-edge of title page; closed 3-cm. tear from fore-edge of p. 5; closed 2-cm. tear from upper edge of p. 339; scattered soiling; otherwise, clean and solid.
