Contemporary half calf with five spine compartments between double gilt rules; gilt-tooled title in second compartment. Paper label with handwritten number in first compartment. Marbled paper over boards. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that this was acquired by the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1864. Former owner's name in pencil at upper edge of p. 345: Milton C. Stayman. Milton C. Stayman (1835-1910) graduated from Dickinson College in 1856. Published weekly. The final 52 pages contain a one-leaf publication issued separately, The People's Journal -- Annals of Industry. Misbinding: pages 129-154 bound after p. 196. The purpose of The People's Journal was "to deal in an earnest and business-like manner with the Claims of Industry" and to be "a zealous, and . . . an efficient helpmate to the Working Man." -- p. [1]. Contents include poetry by Mary Howitt; caricatures by Kenny Meadows; an article about the Hutchinson family of musicians from the United States with a full-page illustration by Margaret Gillies; fiction by Mary Howitt and others; Reports of Lectures Addressed Chiefly to the Working Classes by W. J. Fox including On the Duties of the Press Towards the People; essays by Thornton Leigh Hunt including The Organization of Labour: Experiment I; essays by William Howitt, including a series, Holidays for the People, which includes an article about May Day with a full-page illustration of people dancing around a May pole by Edward Duncan; works by Mary Leman Gillies including Antagonism of the Classes and essays on housing; and articles by Giuseppe Mazzini about Poland and about Attilio and Emilio Bandiera.
