About This Item

Seattle: People's Programs, 1953. Ephemera. Two different four-panel cards, the larger one 7x8.5 inches, toned but otherwise very good. "'A Medal for Willie' was written by the young Negro playwright William Blackwell Branch. The play had its world premier in New York about two years ago, on the evening before its author was inducted into the army." The play depicts the award of a medal to the family of a Southern Black man killed in Korea. One of the cards discusses the theatrical group's efforts to expand into the community, hinting at the difficulties it had faced for hosting the Communist singer Paul Robeson.
