Gilt top edge. Gift inscription dated Christmas 1903 to previous owner. Spine ends a bit soft, unobtrusive pencil marginalia on a few pages, rear endpapers mildly foxed. Contains 25 plates of photographs taken by Riis of New York's lower east side tenements, conditions of which Riis decried and sought to reform. A nice copy of a quite scarce title..

Clean and Near Fine in its navy-blue cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the spine. Light scuffing to the rear panel, otherwise very sharp. 12mo, top-edge gilt, 190 pgs.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Cloth boards show shelf and handling wear with light soiling, edge, corner, and spine wear. Overall a solid copy showing minimal signs of use. Photo is of the copy we have here at Barbed Wire Books.

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. Missing page corner as depicted, affecting the first front illustration page, affects a small amount of caption text, and the edges of 2 photos. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
