This is the only hardcover appearance of the comedic detective Philo Gubb, who was highly popular throughout the 1910s, so much so that the author's plan to kill him off was overturned by public pressure. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover blocked in black. With dust jacket. Engraved frontispiece and 19 plates by Rea Irvin. Front hinge splitting, else a very good copy in the dust jacket, chipped with some loss, split along folds. Queen's Quorum 61.
