8vo. [i-iii]iv-viii, 586 pp. [6]. Lacking original wrappers, spine remnants remain. Previous owner's ink inscription to title page ("M.W. Holcomb from cousin J.H. Holcomb 1863"). Title page detached but present, rest of text tightly bound. Heavy soiling, chipping, and wrinkling to text block, some scattered foxing. All text remains readable.
Contents include chapters on vocal sound and pitch, accent and cadence, ranting, guttural emphasis, pause and monotony, intonation of interrogative sentences, and melody of speech.
