About This Item

Ward Ritchie Press, Los Angeles, 1961; First Edition; quarto, 127 pages; orange and white cloth with front board photo illustration. Pioneer study of Adam Clark Vroman, dedicated photographer and devoted historian of the American Southwest, whose prolific photographic work had been almost entirely forgotten before publication of this book in 1961. Edited by Ruth I. Mahood, Curator of the History Division at Los Angeles County Museum, who together with Lawrence Clark Powell at the Library at University Of California, Los Angeles, was the driving force behind the discovery of the original Vroman negatives, 2400 in all, in a storage facility at the Visual Education Department at Los Angeles County Schools. Lengthy Vroman biography at the front by Beaumont Newhall, a full account of the discovery of the Vroman negatives by Ruth Mahood, and details of the printing of the negatives, by William Webb. Strikingly illustrated with 104 photographs reproduced from contemporary contact prints made from the original 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" glass negatives, 92 of them full-page. Fine, in a Fine dust jacket.
