Illustrated with map and tissue-guarded plates. Thirty page "Historical Introduction" by scholar Milo Quaife. Number 47 in "The Lakeside Classics" series. Contains selections from writings on the California Gold Rush, involving three of the most important routes - the voyage around Cape Horn by Hinton R Helper, the journey by sea and across the Isthmus of Panama by J. D. Borthwick, and a journey by sea, and overland across Mexico by Daniel B. Woods. Also reprints a contemporary survey of the gold regions in the spring of 1848 by an unidentified California correspondent of the New York Herald, selections from Bayard Taylor's El Dorado that tell of San Francisco boom years, selections from The Land of Gold, or Three Years in California by Rev.
