New York: D. Appleton & Company. Very Good. 1875. First Edition. Leather. Steel Plate engravings and woodcuts; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 488 pages; 1875 D. Appleton & Company, NY. Volume I only (of 3) being the British Isles 1st edition. Soundly bound in publisher issued full grain patterned brown leather with decorative borders and panels in blind and pictorial title design to cover in gilt. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt boards beveled at edges and all edges gilt. Silk patterned paper endpages; hinges lined with cloth as issued. Some surface skinning to leather over corners and joints and light rubbing edges. Some superficial tears and crease to the 2nd plain paper endsheets and a few tiny mended nicks to front edge of the first few leaves of text. Lavishly illustrated with over 21full-page steel engravings and many in-text and half page wood engravings. Included are exquisitely detailed views of forest scenery, the southern and Cornish coasts of Great Britain, the Derby Dales, English castles, abbeys, and churches, etc. Among the illustrators and engravers are Birket Foster, Harry Fenn; etc . Snugly bound and clean with plates and cuts in fine condition. Light binding wear but overall quite VG. ... Oversize book will require additional charges for most shipping methods. .
