About This Item
Nuremburg, 1714. First edition. A rare double-size folding plate of a pineapple from Volckamer's work on exotic citrus fruit, published from 1708 to 1714. Tab IV is one of 4 double-size plates of pineapples, the split pineapple appearing as a sun floating above a harbor scene with a dozen ships in the harbor. Slt. damage at fold with two small repaired pin holes (binding sewing). Copper engraving with later hand color, 13 1/4 x 14 7/8" with a 1/2" or more margin. Jos. A Montalegre, fecit. Margin added lower left. Volckamer's elegant prints of then-exotic citrus are pictured in a large scale, seeming to "float" in the skies above landscape scenes below. The locations are purported to be in Nuremberg and northern Italy, which is conceivable in this print - other views appear to be more tropical. Dunthorne # 323.
