About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co, 1885. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. Two historical essays by the English novelist, priest and historian Charles Kingsley In an attractive binding, with binding stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper, of Mudie. Contains Plays and Puritans and Sir Walter Raleigh and his Time. With a frontispiece engraving of Walter Raleigh. Charles Kingsley was born in 1819, son of the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Following in his fathers footsteps, in his adulthood, Kingsley pursued the ministry. Seeing great success, he was later appointed as the chaplain to Queen Victoria. This royal connection continued as he also became the private tutor to the Prince of Wales, a position he held whilst serving as Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. Over the course of his life Charles Kingsley had an impressive ministerial and academic career, holding numerous prestigious roles throughout his lifetime. A strong believer in the church and in education, Kingsley own politics and religious stance often informed his literary works. Other beliefs he held, which form themes in his writings include, his belief in social reform, his sympathy towards Darwin's theories and 'The Origins of Species', as well as his criticism of Catholicism. In a half calf binding with marbled paper-covered boards and gilt to spine. Externally sound, with some rubbing to leather at corners and edges. Spine has a bit of shelfwear to head and tail, but is still lovely and bright. Binders stamp to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Light spotting to first and last few pages, but otherwise clean and bright, with just the very occasional mark. Very Good Indeed
