About This Item

London: G Keith, 1762. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 10" by 7.5". None. The first edition of this scarce poetry collection by Scottish antiquary, John Ogilvie. Illustrated, with beautiful headpieces and two engraved plates. A scarce edition of this collection, with only one held on Copac, being the ESTC copy. The ESTC lists several institutions that hold this work, all of the British locations are legal deposit libraries. With five engraved head-pieces and two engraved plates. Engravings are stated as being Anthony Walker, an English printmaker and artist. Appears to have been bound without the half-title according to ESTC collation. ESTC No. T42659. John Ogilvie was an 18th Century Scottish minister, hymn writer and poet. His poetry brought more success than his longer texts. This collection boasts six Odes by Ogilvie, 'The Day of Judgment, A poem' and several miscellaneous poems. To the start of this work is an essay on ancient lyric poetry by Ogilvie through the form of two letters to James, Lord Deskfoord. This is likely to be James Ogilvy, 6th Earl of Findlater. A nicely printed collection of poetry, embellished with detailed engravings by Anthony Walker. In a full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the extremities. Patches of rubbing to the extremities. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, J E Major. Internally, firmly bound. 'National Library of Scotland' stamp to the verso of title page and to page 101 at the bottom margin. Pages are generally bright with occasional scattered spots. Very Good
