None Important person connection: Rothensteiner, John E. (John Ernest), 1860-1936-prolific poet, historian, writer, scholar, and, bibliophile who’s extensive book collection of 20,000 volumes was given to a small college in need of a library. After the close of the college in 1991 the bulk of the collection ended up at the Newberry Library in Chicago, minus some books, such as this one, that were removed due to duplication, condition and or various other reasons. Very Good. +Plus portrait, vignette title page, and 3 leaves of plates. 12mo. 200mm. Original publisher's full green cloth binding decorated in blind and gilt with a floral and bird design surrounding the title. Spine ruled in blind and lettered and decorated similarly in gilt. All edges gold gilt. Boards clean but rubbed around the edges. Spine with some wear to head and base and several insect holes. Corners bumped. Contents clean. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his 'Essays of Elia' and for the children's book 'Tales from Shakespeare' co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764-1847). Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the center of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as 'the most lovable figure in English literature'. Oversized or heavy volume, additional shipping charges will apply.
