Sawyer 1952 First Edition roy.8vo 319pp, 1952 VG+ to Near Fine original red boards, Inscribed and Signed by the Author on ffep, light shelf wear, otherwise very clean throughout, in VG slightly frayed and edge-worn DW, with tape repair to head of spine, now protected in Brodart sleeve. A collection of four essays based on appendices originally published in Penzer's edition of Tawney's Katha-Sarit-Sagara (The Ocean of Story), with many revisions and additions. In the first essay we are introduced to the Poison Damsel. Her nature is examine d and dissected, her methods described, and the possible explanations of her origin are considered, including the origin of venerial disease. The Tale of Two Thieves, familiar by its version in Herodotus, is traced throught its two thousand year his tory, with the different motifs considered in detail. In the third essay, Sacred Prostitution is dealt with in detail, both in India, the Ancient East and West Africa. The final essay consists of an exhaustive treatment on the custom of Betel-Chewin g. The complete area where the habit exists is fully covered, along with the effects of chewing.
