DUring the American Revolution the relationship between civilians and the miliary was new ground. The Continental Congress had the power to designate General Officers. This is the first book to deal at length with this aspect of command decision making and the relationship between Washington and his principal commanders as well as the friction between the 'regular' army and the militia. In addition to the treason of Benedict, Washington had to contend with feuds between his commanders, most notably that between Horatio Gates and Philip Schuyler during the campaign in their home state of New York.
