About This Item
William Pickering, 1852. First Edition. Hardcover. cxlvi pages. 5-1/2 by 7 inches. The second book by Edward FitzGerald, best known for translating the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. This is an anonymously published collection of aphorisms. 'I meant it to be the best little book of its kind extant. I am not sure it be not -- but it is not as good as I intended,' FitzGerald wrote to E. B. Cowell, in February 1852. According to Terhune and Terhune, Letters of Edward Fitzgerald, vol. 2, p. 48, the author had 250 copies printed. First edition (first printing). Edges tanned, previous owner's name on rear pastedown; binding a bit shaken, else very good. A nice copy. [JSP01].
