About This Item
Boston: S. Burdett, 1832. Third edition, “Revised and improved by the American editor.” From the library of Longfellow bibliographer Jacob Chester Chamberlain, and with his custom yellow cloth dust jacket with “Longfellow” underneath the title on a morocco spine label. This copy appeared at auction with Chamberlain’s other books at Anderson Auctions in February, 1909. Publisher’s muslin with a printed paper label; some foxing; one later bookplate in addition to Chamberlain’s; very good. The more recent Bibliography of American Literature does not attribute this work to Longfellow. Chamberlain’s assumption may have been based on its similarity to contemporary Romance language texts edited or translated by Longfellow, many of them also published in Boston. The attribution of some of these is based on Longfellow correspondence, none of which has yet been found referring to this particular work.
