Generally regarded as Greene's masterpiece, this novel received little attention from American readers, only the gain increasing popularity and critical acclaim for the decades to follow. Fact-based story of a Mexican Province that banned the Catholic Church and repressed its priests by, among other things, forcing them to marry.
Greene's protagonist is a flawed "Whisky Priest"in Tobasco pursued by the state police.In the decade that this novel was reprinted Greene was officially rebuked by the Catholic Church. Greene later had an audience with the Pope, who allegedly expressed support for his freedom of expression.
The novel was later adapted into a movie and play, with a distinguished group of actors playing the "Whisky Priest." Henry Fonda played the role in John Ford's, "The Fugitive." The same character on stage was performed by such names as Paul Scofield and Lawrence Olivier.

Synopsis
Graham Greene (1904–1991) worked as a journalist and critic, and was later employed by the foreign office. His many books include The Third Man , The Comedians and Travels with My Aunt . He is the subject of an acclaimed three-volume biography by Norman Sherry.
