About This Item
This is an antique sporting book, "Practical Hints on Shooting" by '20-Bore' (Basil Tozer). 1887 1st edition; Kegan Paul, Trench, & Co.; London. "Being a treatise on the Shot Gun and its Management; Game, Wildfowl, and Trap Shooting; Together with Notes on Sporting Dogs and Ferrets, and Other Useful Information Relative to Shooting." The book features numerous illustrations.
The contents are as follows: On the Choice of a Gun; Barrels; Essential Parts of the Gun; On Guns in General; Powder, Shot, and Cartridges; Gun Cleaning, and Shooting Paraphernalia; Shooting - Preliminary Remarks; General Hints on the Handling of Firearms, and Shooting; Partridge Shooting; Pheasant Shooting; Grouse Shooting; Woodcock Shooting; Snipe Shooting; Quail Shooting; Rook Shooting; Ground Game Shooting; Duck, Sea-Fowl, and Fen-Bird Shooting; Miscellaneous Shooting; Concluding Remarks on Game; Pigeon Shooting; Artificial Shooting; Sporting Dogs; Ferrets; Addenda.
From the Preface: "In penning these few pages, therefore, we shall endeavour to place before the reader in as concise a manner as convenient a plain outline of the shot gun; its manipulation and necessary appendages; also shooting in all its branches - excepting with the rifle and pistol - together with a few comments concerning sporting dogs and ferrets, at the same time purposely omitting as much as possible technical terms and long-winded explanations. As this treatise is merely written for the benefit of beginners, we shall not enter into the multifarious details of gunmaking, barrel-boring, and all the intricacies of the various systems of gun-locks and breech actions now in use, as the tyro would probably find such both tedious and uninteresting."
Condition:
Clean front & back covers; the red cloth on the spine has sun-faded. Bumped bottom-right corner of the front cover. Tight binding with no loose pages. Cracks at the front and rear hinges between the end papers and pastedowns resulting in the front cover being shaky (the back cover is firmly attached despite the crack). Nice interior - the pages are clean with no notable issues found. Overall the book is in Good condition.
