About This Item
London: J Whiston and B White et al, 1759. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 10.5" by 8". Not Stated. The first English edition of Duhamel du Monceau's treatise on husbandry. Illustrated, with six plates. Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau was a French physician and botanist. He carried out many experiments in plant physiology and this work is formed of several treatises. His 'Traite de la culture des terres' was published in 1750, which was then followed by five further parts, with the final part being issued in 1760. The editor of this work, Mills, discussed these different parts to his preface. This English edition was translated and edited by John Mills. This was his first work in the field of agriculture and is a translation of various experiments from the then five volume work by Duhamel du Monceau. Mills decided to include the experiments that seemed the most instructive in the modern practice of farming. The preface notes that 'Duhamel and his correspondents have set the world an example which has long been wanted, and greatly desired by all who have the good of their country at heart... They have given us a series of experiments in this most useful art, continued for several years together, with accuracy and judgment'. ESTC No. T107757. With a folding table and six engraved plates. Collated, complete. Directions to the binder and errata to the verso of the final text leaf. Publisher's advertisements are to the final leaf. This work has chapters on roots, leaves, food of plants, and much more. It is a fascinating eighteenth century guide to agriculture edited by an individual who was one of the earliest publishers of complete treatises on all branches of agriculture. In a full calf binding. Rebacked, with the contemporary boards preserved. Externally, smart. Patches of rubbing to the boards, resulting in a small amount of loss. Original spine label has been laid down on the rebacked spine, and has a small amount of loss. Internally, firmly bound. Title page has been repaired. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
