London & Dublin: J. Ridgway; Hodges and Smith, 1845. Second edition, greatly enlarged. Illustrated with a few small engravings in the text, small octavo, pp 234, some foxing and age-toning throughout, otherwise sound internally, purple cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt on the upper cover, slightly worn and faded, lower cover wrinkled, lacking 8mm of the spine head, the spine has "Lyons Orchid" written on it. RARE. [Lyons, antiquary, horticulturist and inventor, made boilers for his glasshouses, orchid baskets, and clocks, and in 1837 constructed his own printing-press, establishing the Ledeston Press. In the same year he imported tropical orchids from Mexico, and in 1839 received thirty-five from Trinidad. His Remarks on the Management of Orchidaceous Plants (first edition, 1843), published by his own press, was, apparently, the first book in English on the cultivation of orchids. By 1845 he had an extensive orchid collection, one of only three privately owned in the country, and this greatly extended second edition reflected this. His comments on temperature, humidity, fresh air and misting in the glasshouse improved orchid cultivation everywhere.] . Second edition. Cloth. Good.

At the Middle Temple Gate, Fleet Street: B. Motte, 1725. First and only edition. Octavo, pp (14), 373, (11), with two engraved folding plates, a little age-toning and slight marking, rear endpaper a little marked and with a contemporary signature - R. Taylor, 1771. The front endpaper has an ink diagram (see our illustration), and the hinge at the title page is cracked but sound. An early signature has been carefully cut from the top of the title page - the engraved surface is not affected. Contemporary panelled calf, a little marked and worn, the spine more worn, the upper joint cracking at the top and bottom. [Blanche Henrey 709.]. [ Little is known about Bradley's childhood aside from an early interest in gardening and the fact that he lived in the vicinity of London, a city at the time with many amateur naturalists. Though Bradley lacked a university education, his first publication, Treatise of Succulent Plants, gained him traction with influential patrons like James Petiver and later,…

Stratfod-upon-Avon: J. Ward, 1817. Two volumes bound in one, small thick octavo, illustrated with eight hand-coloured plates by James Sowerby, pp x, 795,(i), endpapers marked, otherwise very clean internally, there is a cracking and weakness at pages 328/9 which could lead to a gathering coming loose, bound in a simple Victorian pebble cloth, slightly worn, with a slight tear to the spine head. RARE. [An appendix was published four years later. Thomas Purton was a surgeon who practised in London and in Alcester. He is particulalrly remembered for his mycological collections. This work was praised by Sir James Smith for its accuracy, but a little damned by Sir Charles Hastings for "its interminable additions, corrections and appendices". It is, nevertheless, a work of great detail and charm.]. First Edition. Cloth. Good. Illus. by James Sowerby.

The Bible, near the Piazza's of the Royal Exchange: J.R. for Ralph South, 1702. Illustrated with a folding plate at the rear, small octavo, pp xiv, 175, (i), age-toned, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise clean and sound internally, contemporary calf rather worn and bleached, rebacked at some point with the original spine laid down, the corners repaired probably at the same time, all still tight and sound. An early signature on the front endpaper - S. Smith (?) , Prior Park, 1784. [Richard Mead, [1673 - 1754) was an English physician. His work, "A Short Discourse concerning Pestilential Contagion, and the Method to be used to prevent it "(1720), was of historic importance in the understanding of transmissible diseases. The present work on poisons "fully displayed his commitment to Pitcairne's style of iatromechanics, stating that mathematical learning would soon distinguish a physician from a quack. 16 Prince's Street, Soho: John Churchill, 1833. Octavo, pp xxviii, 398, (ii), slightly age-toned, but otherwise extremely clean and sound internally, a contemporary signature on the front blank [C. Weathers ?], with the half-title, original cloth-backed boards, a little age-toned and rubbed, recently re-cased with new endpapers, the original spine laid down, with the remains of the original paper label very darkened. RARE. Although dated 1835, this is obviously a slightly later issue, as there are two publisher's catalogues bound in at front and rear dayed 1838 and 1839 respectively. This book seems considerably scarcer than the translation of Rayer's other work of 1835. [Pierre François Olive Rayer (1793 - 1867) was a French physician who was a native of Saint Sylvain. He made important contributions in the fields of pathological anatomy, physiology, dermatology, comparative pathology and parasitology. ]. First British edition. Cloth-backed boards. Very Good.
