Many notations to endpapers. Cloth on covers is peeling and rippled. Leather is worn through to material underneath. Gilt lettering on spine is barely readable. Corners nudged. Age-tanned. Occasion page torn or partially missing. Hinges started. Numerous tables and illustrations. Maps. 1923 map of Oregon laid-in. Small section of Anti-slavery Almanac pages laid-in. 934 pp with general index. This is a good reader copy and is still tightly bound. "This work is intended for the use of all persons concerned either with the navigation of ships or with the determination of latitude and longitude on shore," (preface).

The front hinge is split by the first page of the Preface, the rear at the endpapers. The first page (mariner's compass) appears to have been attached to the front paste-down. Prelims and endpages heavily foxed. Page edges soiled, toned and foxed. Written in ink on the dedication page verso 'Ernest B Heritage / Barque 'Woolahra. 1887 / James Barneson Master' and by the upper edge of the facing page 'E B Heritage / Barque 'Loch Bredon / J Rae, Master. Half-leather with damage to the cloth on both boards, including wear to the edges with damage to the leather at the spine head.. Seventeenth Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo.

London: J. D. Potter, 1854. xxvi, 908 pp. Octavo. Brown leather cover. Gilt lines and lettering in a black label on the spine. Boards have some scuffs. Corners rubbed. Spine has a crack and some wear, particularly to the tail. Edges trimmed with moderate dust soiling. A previous owner's bookplate, signature, penciled notations and a chart written in ink on the end papers. Endpapers rather stained. Inside, quite a clean and tight copy with faint foxing at the extremities of the volume. Illustrated with many tables and sketches throughout. This volume was previously owned by Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David's bookplate is on the front free endpaper.</p><p></p><p>Please note this volume is quite heavy; additional shipping charges may apply. 1854
