Roger Schabol was born in Paris in 1690; he studied at the Sorbonne, then joined the Jansenists. Cardinal de Noailles became his mentor guiding him through his clerical career to become the director of schools of the parish of Saint-Laurent. When Cardinal de Noailles died in 1729, Father Schabol devoted himself to his lifelong passion for gardening. Having read the works of the Quintinye and others, Schabol practiced on his father's country house in Sarcelles, north of Paris. At some point, Schabol became acquainted with the gardeners of Montreuil, who specialized in the cultivation of peaches, which led him to write an article on peach tree cultivation published in March 1755 in le Journal Economique. His continuing interest in fruit trees and other plants, leading to his experimentation with improved techniques to espalier and prune them. Schabol reputation as a skilled gardener spread, gaining him entree to wealthy circles in Paris and her environs. Even the King granted him an interview in 1762 and engaged Schabol to tend the gardens of the royal residence at Choisy, southeast of Paris. This book presents some of his extensive knowledge, both theoretical and practical gathered over fifty years of gardening. He had hoped to expand upon it, but he died in Paris in 1768. ; .
