Gottfired Less [1736-1797] was born in Polish Prussia, educated in theology at the Universities of Halle und Jena. He became a professor of theology at the Akademischen Gymnasium Danzig, and then at the University of Göttingen, where he was made Doktor der Theologie in 1766. In 1784, he was named as head of the faculty [Primarius] at Göttingen. A nicely preserved copy of this classic of Lutheran theology, with minor foxing and toning scattered throughout. It was probably printed somewhere in Italy around 1790, though there is no date printed. It probably was made in the Marche, near Macerata, where the translator was a Senator in the Repubblica romana. (The date comes from a catalogue entry in the database of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico delle biblioteche italiane e per le informazioni bibliografiche - ICCU). Antoine Gouan (1733 – 1821) was a French naturalist from Montpellier and an early expositor of Linnaean taxonomy in France. In 1752, Gouan received his doctorate under Antoine Magnol and practiced medicine at Saint-Éloi Hospital in Montpellier while continuing to pursue his interest in natural history. In 1762 Gouan published this plant catalog of the botanical garden at Montpellier titled Hortus regius monspeliensis. Linnaeus sponsored Hasselquist's travels in the Holy Land, and published this book after the author's death. Soulsby 3577. In 1747, Frederic Hasselquist entered the study of his teacher Carolus Linnaeus to announce his decision to go to the Holy Land and explore its natural history. This decision was prompted by a lecture in which Linnaeus complained that the natural history of the Holy Land was almost as little know as that of the remote provinces of India. Hasselquist finally embarked on his journey in 1749; visiting parts of Asia Minor, Egypt, Cyprus and Palestine, making large natural history collections. Unfortunately, his health succumbed to the fatigues of travel, and he died near Smyrna on his way home.
