About This Item

Unpublished, 1940. Original Manuscript . No Binding. Good. Original Carbon Of A Typescript, 227 Pp, With Extensive Pencil Correction, Signed In Pencil At End. A Modern Historical Novel About Tibet Under Chinese Rule, By The Wife Of A Christian Medical Missionary In Tibet 1903-1922 (Ending When Her Husband Was Murdered In A Road Incident). Undated, Possibly Written Circa 1910-1935. A Very Strongly Painted But Fictionalized Depiction Of Probably Real Events In China's Ruthless Subjection Of The Remnants Of The Tibetan Monarchy. Shelton And His Wife And A Daughter, And Others, Wrote A Number Of Books About Their Experiences; His Collection Of Artwork Was Largely Sold To The Newark Museum, Which Prominently Features Their Work, Other Artwork Was Sold To John D. Rockefeller Jr. An Archive Of Their Papers And Photographs Is At The University Of Oregon. [An Archive Of Material By Their Daughter Dorris, Including Her Children's Book "Sue In Tibet" And Other Material, And A Much Larger Archive Of Dr. Shelton's Annotated Photographs, Extensive Scrapbooks Of Clippings And Papers, Books, Etc. Are Also Available Separately. Such Original Material From Early Twentieth Century Tibet Is Scarce, As Most Tibetan Libraries Were Burned By The Chinese Authorities And Writings About Everyday Life In Tibet Itself Have Been Entirely Prevented Or Heavily Censored For Well Over 120 Years, The Missionary Writings Being A Striking Exception. )
