About This Item

London: Picador, 2007. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. With unclipped dust jacket which has a very small nick to top edge otherwise fine. No inscription very clean throughout. Jeffery Goldberg moved from Long Island to Israel while still a college student. In the middle of the first Palestinian Uprising in 1990 the Israeli Army sent him to serve as a prison guard at Ketsiot, the largest jail in the Middle East. Realising that amongst the inmates were the future leaders of Palestine, and that this was a unique opportunity to learn from them about themselves, he began an extended dialogue with a prisoner named Rafiq. This is that story. It is a remarkable book; spare, impassioned, energetic, and unstinting in its candour about both the darkness and the hope buried within the animosities of the Middle East.

A winner of the National Magazine Award for Reporting, he is also a former columnist for The Jerusalem Post and The Forward. He lives with his family in Washington, D.C. This is his first book.
