The author recounts his experiences in training, and service in Europe with the 11th Armored Division; at war's end, he visited the Mauthausen concentration camp and took the opportunity for more pleasant tourist-type activities. After the war, he was a teacher and businessman, serving as president of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, and later as Nixon's Director of Selective Service.
