About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, (1959). Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), xvii, 435 pp. Very Good, with slight sunning to edges; in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: “..Mr. Painter has identified all the places, people and facts, the encounters, friendships and loves in Marcel Proust’s life that went into the making of his great book and into his earlier novel, Jean Santeuil. He has succeeded in relating the man and his work as no other biographer has before him -- the man and his work and his society, for Mr. Painter’s book is both a critique of Proust and a social history of his time. This masterpiece of research is therefore a biography with all the excitement of a detective novel. We read of Proust’s split background, half Jewish, half Catholic, in the upper bourgeoisie; of his tender, complicated relationship with his mother; of his schoolboy essays, his early symptoms of asthma, the scenes in the salons where he is “cultivated.” Mr. Painter gives the first full account of Proust’s homosexuality based on evidence. But the evidence also refutes the claim sometimes made that all of the women loved by the Narrator are disguises of men loved by Proust. “Readers who have felt all along that Proust’s picture of heterosexual love is valid and founded on personal experience will be glad to find that instinct justified.” Mr. Painter’s social history of the people -- gilded, dazzling, witty and exotic -- who made up the author’s world provides what must be a definitive sourcebook for Proustians. His portrait, for instance, of the fantastically eccentric and occasionally revolting Robert deMontesquiou, principal model for the Baron de Charlus, is fascinating in its own right.
