Sacramento: California State Printing Office, 1880. First Edition. Leather. Near Fine/Custom Clear Mylar. (xv) 280 pages. SIGNED/INSCRIBED by General Samuel Backus in ink to Professor John LeConte in ink on a front free endpaper, "Professor John LeConte / President - University of Cal. / Compliments / Samuel W. Backus / Adjutant -General Cal." Original morocco binding with gilt front cover titling with California state seal. 4" x 5 1/2". General Samuel Backus served in the California Battalion (Part of the 2nd Massachusetts Voluntary Cavalry Regiment) during the Civil War. Following the war, he served as Adjutant General of the State of California. John LeConte was Professor of Physics and President of the University of California at Berkeley from 1875 - 1881. His Brother Joseph LeConte was a Professor of Geology at Cal and a Yosemite expert.This is a very scarce association copy of a book almost never seen. A Near Fine copy (Bookplate on front pastedown; possibly some restoration to cover, but if it has been done, it has been done expertly ) and now in a custom clear mylar protective jacket.
