About This Item

Birmingham, Alabama:: Notable Trials Library, 1992.. Facsimile Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: from a series with semi-uniform bindings -- quarter leather (leather at the spine); with gilt decorations; raised spine bands; all edges gilt; ribbon place marker; Fine condition.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Appendices. Marbled endpapers. Description: This is a volume from the Notable Trials Library under the general editorship of Alan M Dershowitz who wrote a special introduction for this facsimile edition. This is a facsimile reprinting of a work published in 1974 by the University of Toronto Press, and includes the single black and white illustration found in that work. Book design by Daniel B Bianchi and Selma Ordewer. From the introduction: ''The treason trial of Lois Riel in 1885 was the Canadian equivalent, in many ways, of the trial of Aaron Burr. Riel was an important personage in Canadian history during the 1870s and 1880s. He served both within and without the structure of government, leading elements of the French-speaking population of Canada in both military and political confrontations with their English-speaking antagonists. Riel was a strange and mystical figure who spent more than a year in an insane asylum, a fact that was to play a pivotal role in his trial. Riel's lawyers pleaded their client not guilty by reason of insanity, but Riel would have none of that defense.'' Included at the end is an reprint of a law report from 1885.
