In 1819 at age 13 he migrated to America and came to reside in New York, N.Y. In 1826 he became the assistant to the superintendent of the Methodist Book concern who manfactured their own books. In 1846 he became the superintendent. He began writing Longking's Questions and Notes which became the standard textbook of Methodist Sunday Schools. He also taught Sunday School at the Green Street N.Y. Church with a class of over 100.
