'Opera Omnia' in the original Latin by Horace, first thus with commentary by Arthur John MacLeane, in a signed Nutt full calf binding. 'Opera Omnia' by the leading Roman lyric poet in the Augustan Age, first edition to feature an extensive commentary by Arthur John MacLeane. Text in the original Latin and commentary in English in double column below. With a preface and introduction by MacLeane, as well as biographical references and indexes to the rear. In a full calf binding signed Nutt of Cambridge. No half title as called for. Page numbers on p. 767 and 768 are reversed as issued in this first edition thus.The aim of this work was to present students and readers with an in-depth understanding of Horace's poems in their letter and spirit, including a biographical and historical sketch of his life. Neat previous owner's marginal annotations to the occasional leaf. In a full calf binding signed Nutt, with marbled edges and endpapers, five raised bands. Loss to the title label to the spine. Externally generally sound with some shelf wear and rubbing to the spine and extremities, minor scuffing to the spine and boards. Previous owner's inscription to the verso front free endpaper, dated 1854, crossed out in blue ink, as well as a more recent ownership inscription undated. Featuring neat marginal notes by a previous owner to the occasional leaf, occasional underlining. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to the occasional leaf, although generally, the pages appear very clean throughout. Good
