London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1880-1895. Cloth. Good. 9.5" by 9.5". R. Caldecott [Randolph Caldecott]. Two volumes, each comprising eight of Randolph Caldecott's colourfully illustrated children's books, with the original wraps bound in. Sixteen volumes rebound in two volumes in cloth bindings, with gilt detailing to the spines. Bookplate of Oscar Boulton to the front paste down. Illustrated with seven colour plates to each volume of Volume I and six colour plates to each volume of Volume II. Collated, complete. Eight volumes in each volume from the 'Picture Books' series of children's books by Randolph Caldecott, published every Christmas for eight years and sold for a shilling each. Each title features the original colourful wraps bound in with colour plates and black and white illustrations in text. With the publisher's advertisements to the rear of the wraps.Volume I comprises: The Diverting History of John Gilpin; The House that Jack Built; The Babes in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog; The Three Jovial Huntsmen; Sing a Song for Six Pence; The Queen of Hearts; and The Farmer's Boy. Volume II comprises: The Milkmaid; Hey Diddle Diddle and Baby Bunting; A Frog he would a-Wooing go; The Fox jumps over the Parson's Gate; Come Lasses and Lads; Ride a-Cock Horse to Banbury and A Farmer went Trotting upon his Grey Mare; An Elegy on the Glory of her Sex: Mrs Mary Blaize; and The Great Panjandrum Himself. Randolph Caldecott was a very popular British artist and illustrator known for his influential work with children's books and humorous depictions of hunting and fashionable life. In cloth bindings. Externally sound, though faded, and a little bumped to the extremities. Hinges to both volumes are strained but held firmly by cords. Internally, generally firmly bound, though the binding is slightly strained between the first couple of volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some spotting to the first and last few pages. Good
