Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine; front cover features blind stamped letting and a small paper paste-on illustration. Map endpapers. Faint area of soiling at the bottom part of the fore-edge of text block, else near fine. Dust jacket shows very minor edgewear and toning; not price clipped ($3.50). DJ in clear archival sleeve. Index. xii, 357 pp. 8.25 x 6 inches. Includes fold-out map of Coon Slough (Vernon County, Wisconsin). The historical story of the whole logging, lumber, and rafting industry of the Mississippi basin from its beginning, through its extraordinary zenith, to its decline and end. The author, who was born in a city on the Mississippi (Davenport, Iowa), drew from his own experiences on the river as well as from the recollections of veterans and from old letters and diaries in reconstructing this milieu of river life. Charles Edward Russell (1860-1941) was an American author, editor, and activist. He won a Pulitzer in 1928 for his biography of the German-American conductor Theodore Thomas and is recognized for being one of the founders of the NAACP (1909).
