About This Item
From the d.j.: "The motivating force behind the Sumpter Valley Railway was the cry Timber-r-r! The humming saws of mills were hungry for logs, digesting them as fast as little locomotives could shift from hillside to millpond, then hauling millions of board feet of finished lumber to the Union Pacific connection at Baker. Born with the sumpter were an array of privately owned loggers like Oregon Lumber, Baker White Pine, Stoddard Lumber, W. H. Eccles and others. Each laid slim gauge rails into the woods and pulled out their log trains with Shays, Climaxes and Heislers. As huge stands of timber fell, thrifty loggers moved their tracks deeper into the blue Mountains. This is the complete story of this narrow gauge and the logging carriers."
